Development

Four stages, one year

A baby's eyes change more in twelve months than at any later point in life. Each set below is designed for one window of that change — what the eye can resolve, and what the mind is ready to notice.

Stage 01 — High Contrast

01

0–3 months

High Contrast

Pure black and white at maximum contrast — the only signal a newborn eye resolves cleanly. Bold edges, radial symmetry, one idea per card.

What your baby sees

Acuity around 20/400. Focus fixed at roughly 20–30cm. Colour barely registers.

Motifs in this set

Eight-point star, girih interlacing, crescent, mihrab arch.

Stage 02 — First Colour

02

3–6 months

First Colour

The Stage 1 structure holds, but one saturated colour enters at a time against black and white. Shapes begin to resolve into objects.

What your baby sees

Colour vision switches on, red first. Tracking improves; focal distance stretches past arm's length.

Motifs in this set

Dome, lantern, date palm, prayer rug, water jug.

Stage 03 — Letters & Shapes

03

6–9 months

Letters & Shapes

Full palette. The huruf hijaiyah appear, each letter paired with a colour illustration of something that begins with it.

What your baby sees

Colour vision near adult level. Depth perception established. Babies begin reaching for what they see.

Motifs in this set

Alif to ya, paired with everyday objects and animals.

Stage 04 — First Words

04

9–12 months

First Words

One clear illustration, one clear word — Arabic, Malay and English at the same size on the same card. Neither language is a translation of the other.

What your baby sees

Vision is essentially mature. Babies map sound to object and begin to point, request and name.

Motifs in this set

Milk, moon, water, mother, father, bird, light, home.

Using them

Three minutes a day is plenty

Hold the card 20–30cm away. Closer than feels natural. Wait for your baby's eyes to settle on it, hold still while they do, and stop the moment they look away. Two cards can be a complete session for a newborn.
